Using the exact differential equations of vibration for a ship's propeller-shaft system obtained in a previous paper, the response of the system to shock on the propeller is calculated and compared with the result obtained previously for an equal shock on the thrust bearing. The maximum force on this bearing is several times as great for the first case as compared with the second. The maximum displacement of the propeller with respect to the stern bearing is also calculated, and is found to depend greatly on the relative rates of propagation of waves of deformation in the shaft and in the ship.
