1 FOREWORD

Over the past few decades ISRM has been dedicating on publishing suggested methods for rock mechanics testing. This work has achievedgreatsuccessandhasbeen compiledintoabookwiththepermissionofElsevier. However Literal descriptions of testing procedures cannot assuredifferentpeopledoingthesamething. It would be muchbeneficialifthetestingdatafollowing these proceduresaredocumentedinastandard spreadsheet. It is also believed that standardizations of the documentedtestingresultswill makeitpossibleto establishadatabasethatcanbeeasilysharedonanon- commercial basis.

The ‘Joint Working Group on Representing ISRM Suggested Methods in Electronic Form (Abbreviated to JWP/RISMEF or RISMEF)’ was established under the permission JTC2 and ISRM TM. The primary purpose of establishing JTC/RISMEFistoensurethattheISRM Suggested Methods to be conducted in standard and electronic procedures. This work will result in a series of spreadsheets asappendicestotheISRMSuggested Methods and a database documenting the applications of these methods andthe related data. The database will be attachedtotheISRMwebsitethatwillbesharedona non-commercial basis.

Therehavebeen52officiallypublishedISRM suggested methods for rock mechanics testing. 7 of them have been selected asfirst groupfor standardization and digitalization, after a close discussion among members of RISMEF. They are:

  • Basic Geotechnical Description of Rock Masses, 1981 April [EUR 4]

  • Characterization of Swelling Rock, 1983 October [EUR 4]

  • Terminology, 1975 (English, German, French) July [EUR 4]

  • Suggested Methods for Determining the Uniaxial Compressive Strength and Deformability of Rock Materials, 1972 October [EUR 4]

  • Suggested Methods for Determining Shear Strength, 1974 February [EUR 4]

  • Suggested Methods for Determining the Strength of Rock Materials in Triaxial Compression, 1977 March [EUR 4]• Suggested Methods for Determining in Situ Deformability of Rock, 1978 September [EUR 4]
