Based on the block hierarchical structure of practical rock masses, this paper presents a systematic study of the mechanical process that structural blocks at different hierarchical levels undergo a confined motion (rotation and translation) under the explosion seismic wave, thus actuating strain concentrations at the surfaces of weakening. Then some neglected conditions of Kocharyan's work in calculating scales of activated blocks is given, the equivalent strain ε* is redefined, and the calculation formula of irreversible deformation region radius under large-scale underground explosion is re-derived. The existing test data confirms its accuracy.
