ABSTRACT:

In this work, a translucent resin material produced by three-dimensional printing (3DP) technology was used to mimic volcanic rock. 3DP, micro-CT scan and 3D reconstruction technologies were employed to transform the digital rock cores into physical rock models. Dynamic compressive and Brazilian disc tests were performed on the Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) system to study its dynamic behaviours. The experimental results indicate that the strength properties and pre-peak stress-time curve of the 3DP models agree well with those of the rock samples. Fracturing process and failure pattern of the 3DP Brazilian disc are also similar to the rock sample. The innovative approach of incorporating micro-CT scanning and 3DP technology provides insight into studying dynamic behaviours of rock materials.
