Abstract
Differential weathering of tuffs results in overhanging configurations so that rockfall events take place. This paper presents some observations in-situ and characteristics of tuffs, some studies on numerical simulations on determining the rockfall travel distances to investigate the rockfall hazard problem at Ayvalı in Cappadocia (Turkey). Laboratory tests on rocks indicated that the rock sampled from the layer just below the top formation is quite vulnerable to water content variation and its strength decreases drastically with an increase in water content. The rockfall hazard is an important issue in Cappadocia (Turkey) and this study may cast some insights to this issue.
