Summary

The foundation rocks of umlam dam in the north-eastern part of tndia have been affected by tJ.10 faults. eme located at the central. part and another at the upstream end of the dam, Innumerable fractures and joint cut through the entire foundation consisting of quartzite and phyllite. The central fault Which runs little askew to the dam, axis containing clay gouge and crushed rocks was treated by a concrete plug followed by grouting down to 10 m extended below the plug. The upstream, fault at the contact of the two rock formations was treated by high pressure grouting down to 45 m. The foundation was strengthened by consolidation grouting of average 10 m depth. The grouting pattern was evolved with strict conformity with the natur disposition and frequency of fractures
