Research and Graduate Courses on Soil Mechanics at the Coordination of Graduate Programs in Engineering, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro are described. This Area of the Civil Engineering Program began its activities in 1967. Forty-one M. Sc. theses were presented until May 1978, and nine more are near completion. Main research lines are: geotechnical properties of residual soils and soft clay deposits; analysis by the finite element method of foundations, excavations, and earthworks; and soil stabilization and pavement mechanics. Research projects under contract are developed for the Rio de Janeiro subway construction, for the Road Research Institute, and in special testing for engineering consultants. New laboratory facilities became available in 1976. The description of the Area is preceded by a presentation of COPPE's history and aims, and its present configuration, together with a brief description of the Civil Engineering Program.
