ABSTRACT

This paper is a summary of ideas concerning the apropriate teaching and researching in the field of Rock Mechanics, in order to meet present and future needs of this science in Brazil.

After identifying the most important difficulties preventing the adequate development and application of Rock Mechanics methodology in heavy construction and mining projects, the authors present their conception on the sequence of phases necessary for the proper formation of Rock Mechanics specialists.

Reference is given to an underway series of Rock Mechanics Courses that are being taught at the Escola de Engenharia de São Carlos - USP, resulting from the participation of IPT researchers in accordance with the proposed teaching philosophy.
