SUMMARY

This paper briefly describes the organisation of teaching and research in the two main aspects of Geotechnical Engineering, namely, Soil Mechanics and Rock Mechanics in. India. The teaching and research in Soil Mechanics is well established, but in Rock Mechanics a beginning has been made in an organized manner.
