The paper showed that the essential reason of rock falls in circumstances of shallow zinc and lead ore mines of the Olkusz region is a rectangular shape of workings inappropriate in respect of stress distribution, however, necessary in case of the use of standing supports. The application of the cemented and bedded bolting in 1970 allowed to drive the oval-shaped narrow workings which reduced the excavation of the working by 20–30 per cent with keeping the active section of the working. Equally important methods for protection against the rock fall consist in the use of new technologies of driving the winzes and also of high-efficiency mining systems such as room-and pillar-and pillar-and-panel systems with the ore discharge through the hoppers. These systems are featured by a modern mechanization of processes of getting and better conditions of work.
