Abstract

Rock bursts represent one of complex manifestations of the rock pressure. This is the type of ground falls in longwall faces imminent also in mining conditions prevailing in the most important Czechoslovak coal basin, namely in the Ostrava- Karviná Coal Field.

Research carried out with the aim to find solutions to this problem revealed that it should be directed to study the problems of failure processes of structural elements within the rockmass in conditions of complex stress. It is also important to study the accumulated energy released during the failure processes of rocks. According to reasons which lead to failure. a principal classification of rock bursts is outlined. The conditions which are necessary and sufficient for the occurrence of rock bursts indicate two main approaches pursued in Czechoslovakia to prevent this hazard in mines.
