The paper starts with a brief review of the problems related to the prediction of the stability of rock walls of excavations at depths, of tunnels and open cast slopes as well as to the prediction of rock burst sand rock falls. Certain remedial measures are also discussed. This review, however, only serves as the background to the proposal of a system of classification of rock masses based upon a rating of classes of rock mass properties pertaining to the stability of rock walls. An example of a classification system for tunnels illustrates how it tan be applied to select suitable support measures.
