Summary
By means of the finite elements method the stress state as well as the state of failure have been studied in the surroundings of an isolated roadway. The effects of joints on the consistency of the immediate cavity contour are predominantly treated in this study especially with regard to the dangers due to rock fall and breakdown. On the base of this study well-founded predictions can be made about the most favourable variant of support and about the interaction between support and ground. The purpose of an efficient support does not consist in having carrying functions, but in assigning more favourable stability properties to the ground in the immediate neighbourhood of the outline.
