The Foes Las project was an exercise in the design and management of excavated slopes in highly deformed Coal Measures strata. A REMIT/RESPONSE (R2) analysis was used to extract the essence of the rock - engineering environment at Foes Las and produce a predictive technique that can be used, understood and, if necessary, modified by others. A set of indicators capable of providing an early warning of impending adverse behaviour was developed from the R2 analysis. The prevailing state of the indicators constituting the Foes Las Alarm for Stability Hazard for each of eight slope failures is examined to test the success of their performance as predictive indicators. Although the overall performance of the FLASH system has been satisfactory, the performance of individual indicators, has been more varied.

The Foes Las project was an exercise in slope design and management in highly deformed Coal Measures strata. Uncertainty in ground conditions was due to geological complexity caused by the Variscan deformation. Conventional approaches to the feasibility assessment, design and management of excavated slopes at Foes Las in the extremely tectonically deformed western part of the south Wales coal basin were found to be inappropriate (Nathanail 1994). A series of significant mass m Erfullung movements have taken place over the past 10 years. Although these have had an impact on site operations, four phases of coaling (I, 2, 3a and 3b) have been successfully completed. The excavation has been treated as an integral part of the site investigation. Engineering geological information about the final batters collected as excavation proceeded, and while access was still possible, allowed a model of the engineering geology of the site to be developed. This was used to identify emerging adverse geological conditions and respond to those mass movements that did occur. The REMIT/RESPONSE (R2) procedure was applied to analyse the lessons learnt from these movements and to develop a management strategy for assessing stability in the final two phases (3b and 4). The R2 exercise was described by Nathanail et al. (1992) and resulted in the Foes Las Alarm for Stability Hazard (FLASH).
