Abstract

Natural stone is widely used as an external wall cladding and flooring material in the construction industry in different tile sizes. In most engineering structures where rock materials are used, rapid temperature variations are primarily responsible for rock deterioration. These thermal irregularities may affect the microstructural properties of the rock and cause some changes in its physical and mechanical properties. These changes have an important role in planning and designing of the construction projects. Temperature is one of the main factors affecting the mechanical properties of rocks. In this study, the effect of different body temperatures (-25°C, -12°C, 24°C, 70°C, and 105°C) on the mechanical properties (uniaxial compressive strength, tensile strength and bending strength) of some different originated rock samples were tried to be determined. The obtained test results were analyzed through statistical analysis techniques and the material behavior under the effect of body temperature was tried to be evaluated.

Introduction

Natural stone has a wide usage area due to its durability and aesthetic appearance of many different applications such as floor coverings, interior and exterior wall cladding material. Natural stones may be exposed to different atmospheric conditions such as rain, wind, moisture, freezing-thawing and temperature differences between night and day. Thus, some physical and mechanical properties of the natural stones may be affected by the atmospheric conditions. Therefore, natural stones must be resistant against to these atmospheric conditions. When natural stones especially used as flooring and covering elements in the buildings contact with rain, surface and ground water, it penetrates by capillary transmission and moves along to the body through micro-cracks and matrix structures. When the air temperature falls below the freezing point of water, water will freeze in the natural stone structure (Figure 1). On the other hand, with increasing air temperature, thermal expansion occurs due to the increasing body temperature, volume increases and it leads to the internal stresses. As a result of these conditions, the physical and mechanical properties of natural stone may considerably be changed.
