Abstract

New economic system of Russia raises a number of urgent problems to be solved by engineering karstology. Numerous difficulties inherent to the process of karst terrains development can be removed by means of standardization of allowable karst hazard which takes account of probable economic, social and environmental damage. Specific karst hazard value is proposed as related to 1 ha area per service life of constructions (100 years). It provides new solutions to engineering and economic problems like strategy and implementation planning in arrangement of antikarst protection activities of both capital and maintenance type, functions of the antikarst protection parameters, insurance issues, prediction of exact date of sinkhole development, etc. Four principles of sustainable development in karst terrains have been formulated in terms of engineering karstology.
