The discrete element method (DEM) is very suitable to simulate the mechanical behavior of jointed rock mass, but the operation in the actual modeling often encounters many difficulties. This paper summarized key technologies in using DEM when modeling the whole tunneling process and evalu-ated the applicability of the technologies through assessing the tunnel stability of the diversion tunnel at K2+010~K2+310 of Pianqiao Hydropower Station.
