Fengsheng Tunnel (underground street) is a typical shallow tunnel project with a small separation to the existed tunnels in soft strata in urban area. The tunnel with a span of 15.9 m under-passes a main road with a minimum overburden of only 3.9 m, and at the same section, overflies two subway tunnels with a minimum separation of only 0.33 m. This paper is to investigate the optimization of the rock support design and construction plan. A numerical simulation by using the finite differential code FLAC3D is carried out to predict the strata deformation, and to examine the safety of the rock sup-port, in order to provide valuable guidance to the design and construction.
