Abstract

Some recent rock falls, which could threaten people and facilities, have been identified in a former quarry of limestones placed near a built-up area. The mechanical properties and fracture pattern have been investigated in order to determine the rock mass quality after weathering, karstification, blast damage processes and stress relaxation. A series of stability analyses, with a Distinct Element Method (DEM) model, were carried out to evaluate stress and displacement distribution near the free surface of rock walls, as a function of steepness, dip direction and rock mass quality.
