There are many scenarios in the cycle of nuclear waste production from mining of uranium for energy production to waste disposal that can have environmental impact. This paper is limited to the management of nuclear waste from energy production with the purpose to minimize the long term environmental consequences on the environment. Nevertheless, it must be kept in mind that also a disposal facility for nuclear waste is an industrial establishment. The environmental concern regarding siting and operation of any industrial facility has of course to consider the interference with the natural and urban conditions. Examples of such disturbances are noise, vibrations and significant modification of the natural environment. This paper is however rather focusing on the management and disposal of nuclear waste with focus on post-closure safety.
