ABSTRACT

The increasing demand in China and India has influenced towards coal price worldwide. Indonesia, as one of the greatest coal exporters, has an important role in supplying the commodity to both countries. In fact, coal trade has contributed tremendously in the Indonesian economic growth. Most of coal mining companies in the country, especially PT. Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC), have plunged into a race in raising their production. Currently, KPC has targeted to ramp up its coal production significantly by the year 2014.

The geotechnical issues of instability on rehandle dump slope, in-pit dump slope over mud material and lifting up the current in-pit dump are always encountered. In addition, these issues are interrelated with the dump optimization that could likely impact towards the coal production target.

Recently, the topography acquired according to the superintendent of pit geologist historical information of mined out pit is not highly effective since some pitfalls were found when modeling material boundary. Thus, GIS approaching tends to overcome this problem. By the system, human error could possibly be reduced and information of mined out pit could be more manageable. Ultimately, instability issue might be decreased and dump capacity could be optimized related with coal production.
