Determination of mechanical properties of rocks is the most interesting problems in rock mechanics, which still is under study.Uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and static elastic modulus (Es) of intact rock are among these properties which are widely used in mining and geotechnical engineering projects. In design stage of tunnels and foundations in rock, the results of laboratory tests, in-situ tests and empirical relationships are often used to predict the basic properties of rock. The estimation of mechanical properties (such as Es & UCS) in laboratory is a time-consuming and laborious job and needs costly equipment, while determining compressional wave (P-wave) velocity and shear wave (S-wave) velocity in laboratory as well as in in-situ condition is an easy, simple, reliable, non-destructive and less complicated work.
The aim of this paper is to find empirical equations that allow the determination of static elastic modulus (Es) and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) using the values of dynamic elastic modulus (Ed) and waves velocity. Hence the mechanical and dynamic properties of rock masses for Sabzkouh water conveyance tunnel and Rudbar HEPP project site were determined in the laboratory. Afterwards the elastic modulus has been correlated with P-wave velocity, S- wave velocity and dynamic modulus with various correlation coefficients.
