This paper aims at reliving essential of huge ancient landslide bodies ill the reservoir area of the Three Gorge and puts forward a new concept of the "Key Position" or huge ancient landslide bodies. On the basis or the study on macro, micromesh, and microcosmic geology characters of deforming cracks, the authors present the reliving forecasting theory and method of the "Key Position" of huge ancient landslide bodies and predicts the reliving the "Key Position" of the HUANGTUPO huge ancient landslide body from spatial and temporal view.
"The successful key of the Three Gorge Project is emigration project". Because or peculiar geological envlronment, there are lots of huge ancient landslide bodies in the reservoir area of the Three Gorge, for example, the volume of SHANGXINGPING huge ancient landslide body In WUSHAN County reaches one hundred and twenty millions m3, the volume of HUANGTUPO huge ancient landslide body in BADONG County reaches forty millions m3. These huge ancient landslide bodies have always been used to construct the new towns, and their reliving disturbed by various factors bring a difficult problem to the emigration project, for instance, it brought great losses to the people' lives and properties in BADONG County that the height section from 150m-210m of the second ditch and below eIevation 170m of the third ditch in HUANGTUPO new site failed in 1995. So how to forecast the reliving of huge ancient landslide bodies from spatial and temporal view is concerned of success or failure of the Three Gorge Project.
Because its volume is huge and its formed age is ancient, a huge ancient landslide body has "super-stability" and "stress restoring" effect which cause mechanics parameters of the sliding zone increasing, so, the total landslide body is not able to relive. But the partial area of a huge ancient landslide body caused by natural and man-made factors (earthquake, rainfall, excavating, loading, reservoir impounding,) begins to deform, break primarily and it can conduce to more area of the huge ancient landslide body to fail. This kind of area is called as "Key Position" of a huge ancient landslide body (He Manchao, 1997). If this area is not able to fail, the other parts of the huge ancient landslide body will be limited to be stable. This is also the reliving essential of a huge ancient landslide body. Hence, the reliving forecasting research to of a huge ancient landslide body in the reservoir area of the Three Gorge, is scientific, reasonable and feasible, focus on the "Key Position".
According to the words above the "Key Position" always lies on the place where the damaged degree of rock mass is high and joints and cracks are more developed in a huge ancient landslide body. So, forms the basis and precondition of the reliving forecasting theory of the "Key Position" of a huge ancient landslide body. (The research focuses on the joints.)
