ABSTRACT:

The paper presents the basic Principles of a research methodology of physical and mechanical properties of flat ice fields ln the Okhotsk Sea. The research took place In an eastern Shelf of Sakhalin island by using the explored structures of hydrocarbon formations. Relationships between ice strength under uniaxial compression and brine content in, ice, samples were obtained, and the connections between elastic wave propagation speed and ice strength were established as well. Key words: structure, ice, strength, sample.

INTRODUCTION

At present perspective hydrocarbon deposits which are planned to be mixed in the nearest future have been explored in the Sakhalin island. The principal environmental factor determinine loads upon offshore oil and gas mining hydrotechnical structures in the Okhotsk Sea is ice formation. With regard to the support element of a shelf structure the main initial parameters introduced into the deign formulas recommended by the codes (1) are ice ultimate strength under uniaxial compression (Rc) and at bending (Rs). These parameters directly effect the design values of ice loads which, in the long run, condition the choice of a structure type, its cost and safety. The determination of the design strength values of ice by using the USSR Codes (1) regarding temperature and salinity in most cases result in the reduction of these values. Taking this fact into account, experimental study of physical and mechanical ice characteristics In the region of the prospective construction seems to be mostly Justified It should be noted that according to the USSR codes requirement the observation term for poorly explored regions should not be less than 5 years.
