Abstract

A horizontal plate breakwater is one of new breakwaters in coastal engineering. A suitably designed horizontal plate breakwater can significantly dissipate incident wave energy, and thus has good wave absorbing performance. The hydrodynamic performance of a submerged horizontal plate breakwater has been well studied using potential theory. However, detailed information on the wave propagation, involving the fluid viscosity effect, is still not enough from the design point of view. In this study, the hydrodynamic performance of the horizontal plate breakwater is examined using OpenFOAM. The flow characteristic near the breakwater and the wave dissipating mechanism of the submerged horizontal plate are discussed.
