ABSTRACT

Strong typhoons and super typhoons do great harm to offshore platforms and pose a serious threat to the design, operation and safety of offshore oil and gas development. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the change trend of super typhoons in China's oil and gas regions under climate change and their influence on the design parameters of oil and gas platforms. Based on the statistics of the frequency and track of typhoons that have affected China's offshore oil and gas areas in history, this paper finds that under the background of global warming, the impact of strong typhoons and super typhoons on China's offshore oil and gas areas in recent 10 years is more severe. Taking the South China Sea oil and gas region as an example, this paper calculates the added value of environmental parameters in the South China Sea after adding environmental samples for 10 years, and finds that wind and wave design parameters have improved overall in typical oil and gas regions. It is concluded that the current design standards of China's offshore oil and gas areas need to be upgraded.

INTRODUCTION

Every decade since the 1980s has been warmer than the previous one, the WMO said, and global warming and other long-term climate change trends are expected to continue. According to the Blue Book on Climate Change in China (2023) released by the China Meteorological Administration, the frequency of extreme high temperature events in China has become more frequent, and the frequency of extreme high temperature events in China has shown a significant increase from 1961 to 2022, and the frequency of extreme high temperature events in 2022 will be the highest since 1961. Correspondingly, the average intensity fluctuation of typhoons landing in China has increased since the late 1990s. China's climate risk index shows an increasing trend. Extreme environmental loads such as wind and waves induced by typhoons will test the structure of offshore platforms. Once an accident occurs, it will not only bring huge economic losses and social impact to the country, but also the Marine pollution caused by it will be disastrous. This paper analyzes the change trend of super typhoons in China's oil and gas regions under climate change and its influence on the design parameters of oil and gas platforms.
