Abstract

Recently, the heightened reservoir dams in South Korea are being increased nationwide to prevent disasters and to secure water resources in the future. An inclined-type core structure may have the technical, permeable, and seismic subject due to the differential settlement and deformation caused by the static and/or dynamic behavior of materials used for heightening work and the existing materials compared to other heightening methods. Thus, the authors have proposed the core enlarging method at the old and new core joint and it has been clarified in previous studies that it is a means of structural reinforcement of the core joint.

However, the optimal enlarging core structure scale for the site must be determined to assess whether enlarging the core is not only structurally but also economically feasible as a means to heighten the reservoir dams for securing future water resources by elapsed time. Therefore, in this study, the water price range that considers an effective design for construction-leakage loss cost according to the core enlargement was discussed in relation to the optimal scale of a heightened inclined core.

As a result, the procedure to decide the optimal core joint scale for designing an inclined-type heightened dam based on both structural and economical concepts can be proposed.
