Abstract
A series of research was originated in order to understand the behavior of high strength steel welded structures under high-frequency impact treatments like ultrasonic and pneumatic impact treatments (all known by different trade-mark names). The comparison of different types of treatment has been performed, with and without artificially induced defects, from which it has been seen that all of them improve the fatigue life to a certain extent, and even can close the introduced defects that will not open in subsequent fatigue loading. A review of the performed and on-gong projects is presented.
