Abstract

In Korea, reclaiming works have been performed actively in many coastal areas during the last two decades. Most of these reclaiming works were performed with dredged soil due to its economical benefits. However, frequent dredgings cause the exhaustion of near shore dredged material and marine pollution. Because of these reasons, nowadays, long distance pumping and transfer of dredged soil from open sea have to be considered. As long distance transfer of dredged soil seems to be more expensive, new interests concerning the development of alternative reclaimed material arose. Studies for using many kind of recycled material such as wasted tire, wasted shell, wasted concrete, etc., as an alternative filling material have been performed. However most of these materials have to go through a series of manufacturing process, and also some of these materials have limited applicability because of its environmental hazard.

Developing new reclaimed material needs many geotechnical and environmental examination such as settling and self-weigh-consolidation characteristics, shear strength characteristics and environmental problems, etc. As the first attempt, DAEWOO E&C in Korea started to study the applicability of CCPs mixture as an alternative reclaimed material.

In this paper, trial construction using coal combustion products(CCPs) as an alternative land reclamation material were suggested.

According to the construction results, reclamation mixed with CCPs showed shortening of construction period, increment of shear strength and minimization of environmental problems.
