ABSTRACT

Data assimilation is an useful method to improve the performance of wave models. The optimal interpolation (OI) was presented and tested in this paper and it was used to generate analyzed wave fields. To avoid the potential energy loss in the wave spectral reconstruction, a new method by shifting the wave spectrum in frequencies was proposed. To test the validity of the assimilation scheme, typhoon Damrey (1210) was used for numerical assimilation experiment. It shows an improvement both of the sea state and of the forecast. The assimilation scheme can correct the bias between the results of wave model and the observations. Besides, the preliminary result shows that the benefits of assimilation remain about 6 hours.
