ABSTRACT

Coastal dikes and seawalls in shallow areas are vulnerable to scour and suction forces of big waves. In a few cases of these structures in a beach or shallow area, they have been destroyed directly by strong wave forces. A lot of field cases also show that scour and suction caused by the continuing action of waves bring about their destruction gradually. Therefore, it is important for us to establish prediction methods of the suction rate of backfilling materials from within their outer structure. In this research, we propose a suction rate formula of backfilling materials from lowest edge of a coastal dike by big waves.
