ABSTRACT

Flow around staggered cylinder pairs at 525 ≤ Re ≤ 755 is investigated experimentally with an emphasis on the effect of forced transverse oscillation of either of the two cylinders. Three cylinder configurations have been tested. The wake undergoes considerable modification for feD/U < 0.10. There are distinct regions of synchronization between the dominant wake periodicity and cylinder oscillation. The combined wake of the cylinder pairs takes significantly different patterns based on whether it is the upstream cylinder or the downstream one which is being oscillated and on the frequency of oscillation.
