ABSTRACT:

Sumitomo Metal, have supplied 99KT UOE pipes with SAWL 485 I FD (X70) heavy wall thickness for NORD STREAM. The Nord Stream twin pipeline system through the Baltic Sea runs from Vyborg, Russia to Lubmin near Greifswald, Germany. 99KT pipes have been shipped by 6 different shipments from April 2010 to March 2011 with excellent quality. No failure of any mechanical testing occurred throughout this order; no retests were required during qualifications and pipe production. In this paper, it is demonstrated that for this X70 heavy wall thickness design, high strength, high toughness at low temperature and mild sour service could be obtained by controlling chemical composition and microstructure.

INTRODUCTION

The Nord Stream twin pipeline system through the Baltic Sea runs from Vyborg, Russia to Lubmin near Greifswald, Germany. The pipelines are built and operated by Nord Stream AG. The Nord Stream route crosses the Exclusive Economic Zones of Russia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Germany, as well as the territorial waters of Russia, Denmark, and Germany.(Fig. 1) The two 1,224-kilometre offshore pipelines are the most direct connection between the vast gas reserves in Russia and energy markets in the European Union. We Sumitomo Metal have supplied 99KT UOE pipes with SAWL 485 I FD (X70), 1153mmID × 30.9mmWT from April 2010 to February 2011.

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENT

All records for pipe dimension were controlled by the means of the Pipe Tracking System. This Pipe Tracking System is a very effective method so that all information of pipes, such as heat No. By using this system, we can take any information for each pipe if we can connect to NORD STREAM on-line system. This process was already approved by IPC, and from now this process will be expected to be a common way for line pipe.
