For the safety concern, analysis of the sea dike of Shanghai Harbor City under the combined impact of spring tide and typhoon storm surge was conducted. Two dimensional hydrodynamic models on storm surge and wind wave were established by covering the domain of Bo sea, Huang sea and Easter Sea. To analyze the potential worse condition, the high tide of spring tide combined with the typhoon directly attacked was simulated by shifting track of typhoon Winnie and the tidal phase. By using the simulation results, the safety of the sea dike was tested by analyzing the stability of armor layer and crown wall as well as amount of wave overtopping. To improve the defense ability of the sea dike, the consolidation strategy was recommended on the potential broken parts of the sea dike. The results of this study can be served for the evaluation on the defense of sea dike along the estuary and coastal waters of Shanghai. It can also provide technical support for making planning of coastal protection in improving the defense of the sea dike.


The city of Shanghai is vulnerable to typhoons as well as the tropical cyclones from western pacific. In the past a half century, more than 500 kilometers sea dikes have been built to protect the city from coastal flooding (Shanghai Municipal Water Affairs Bureau,1996), the flooding protection design criterion has reached 200 year extreme high water level with the wind strength of 12 on the Beaufort scale or 100 year water level with 11 wind scale in urban area, for rural area is 50~100 year extreme high water level with 11 wind scale. The criterion for urban area is applied on Harbor City. Levels of flood protection for housing, businesses or infrastructure are different with countries or regions.
