Estimation of ship's resistance in ice-covered sea has been a very interesting topic to shipbuilders. Ice resistance is related to propulsion of a ship and it determines the engine power of the ship. Generally, ice resistance problems are related to ice conditions and ship dimensions, such as ice thickness, ice flexural strength, ship's type, engine power and propeller size. In former study, One of the widely-used ice resistance prediction methods, introduced by Spencer(1992) of Canada, is reviewed(Jeong and Choi, 2009). MOERI ice model basin supported by Korean Ministry of Knowledge Economy was completed end of September 2009. In this paper, we conduct ice model test of MOERI standard Icebreaker model and non-dimensional coefficients in ice resistance prediction formula are obtained using the model-scale test in MOERI ice model basin. The ice resistance prediction for MOERI standard icebreaker model is discussed.
Ice resistance problems are generally different from ice load estimation. Ice resistance related to propulsion of ship and it was very close to power requirement of ship. Ice resistance estimation has been interesting subject to most researchers since 1970. There have been many theoretical approaches to solve the problem. Especially most researchers separate ice resistance into several components with some physical background(for example, Kashteljan et al., 1968; Lewis and Edwards, 1970; Enkvist, 1972; Vance, 1975; Kotras et al., 1983; Ionov, 1988; Spencer et al., 2001). Ice resistance estimation is an important mission in initial design stage of icebreaking vessels and is related to ship's performance in ice-covered water. In this study we conducted model test for MOERI standard icebreaker model in MOERI ice model basin. The ice resistance tests in level ice and pre-sawn ice were performed with the 0.238, 0.357 and 0.476 m/s (2, 3 and 4 knots in full scale).
