ABSTRACT

Landing pier, which has been one of the most important harbor facilities, generally employs the combination of vertical piles and batter piles for foundation. In the design of landing piers, the lateral loadings due to earthquake as well as wave actions should be considered. Despite the high efficiency of the static lateral resistance, however, the batter piles have restrictively been utilized because of their poor dynamic performance against earthquake loadings. In this study, the evaluation on the seismic performance of landing piers with the batter piles were carried out and new aseismatic methods of batter pile cap were investigated by performing the shaking table tests and three dimensional finite element simulations. Two types of analyses were illustrated: response spectrum analysis using natural frequency and direct time integration. Various factors such as the slope of the batter piles, embedded soil depth, batter pile cap conditions were considered in the analyses. The results revealed that the acceleration and displacement response of the pile as well as natural frequency were highly correlated with soil depth and the slope of the batter piles. The applicability of a rubber as a seismic isolator, which is expected to increase the seismic performance of a batter pile, was also verified.

INTRODUCTION

Since the Kobe earthquake occurred in Japan in 1995, the researches on the earthquake effects have been vigorously performed in Korea. The evaluation of the safety against earthquake loading and seismic design are being under way for various key industries including previously constructed structures as well as newly scheduled port facilities. Landing pier, which has been one of the most important harbor facilities, generally employs the combination of vertical piles and batter piles for foundation. In the design of landing piers, the lateral loadings due to earthquake as well as wave actions should be considered.
