Abstract

Experimental design (ED) methodology has been recently introduced into the petroleum industry and has been shown significant potential in assessing subsurface reservoir uncertainties. ED maximizes the information derived from minimum number of experiments. This paper put forward a new ED approach, which separately assesses reservoir uncertainties and development options followed by merging them together. The compact two-level screening design (Plackett-Burman design) is employed to evaluate reservoir uncertainties. Then, D-Optimal design(3-level design, which maximizes the orthogonality of the design matrix) is used to evaluate the uncertainties related to development decisions. At last, one-variable-at-a-time technique, as a supplementary part, is used to assess perforation location of well. The field application of this new approach indicates it successfully adopts all the beauties of the three ED and mitigates their weakness and key uncertainties which impact future reservoir performance can be systematically identified and quantified.
