Abstract

Experimental studies on two-phase gas-viscous oil flows have been performed in IFE's Well Flow Loop (WFL), in a pipe with internal diameter of 0.1 m. The gas phase was high density sulphur hexafluoride, SF6, at 7.5 bara and the oil phase was white oils with four different viscosities, ranging from 0.069 Pa·s to 0.153 Pa·s. A fast response X-ray computer tomography (CT) system was utilised to measure holdups and phase distributions. The measurements from the X-ray CT system have been systematically analysed to illustrate how the oil viscosity impacts the flow characteristics, including axial and cross-sectional – particularly vertical-phase distribution, interface structure and wave/slug characteristics.
