Abstract
The conductivity of produced brines is very high: typically we might expect to see a salinity of 100,000ppm to 200,000ppm (4,5) which equates to a conductivity of approximately 40Sm-1 at representative well temperatures. Oil wells produce a multiphase mixture of oil and water and there is a need to measure the downhole water fraction for improved well control. We report the results from a set of calculations which describe the dielectric behaviour of oil-water multiphase fluids where the brine is highly conductive, and describe the potential impact on water cut meter design.
