ABSTRACT
The effect of drag reducing polymers on interfacial characteristics in stratified oil-water flows was studied in a horizontal 14 mmID acrylic pipe, using tap water and a middle distillate oil (ρ = 830 kgm-3, μ = 0.0055 kgm-1s-1) as test fluids. The polymer Magnafloc 1011 was added in the water phase. The addition of the polymer extended the region of stratified flow and delayed the transition to dual continuous and dispersed flows. It also resulted in a decrease of interfacial waves, increase in interfacial wavelength, and decrease in wave amplitude. The polymer also reduced the pressure drop by about 40%
