Multiphase boosting with twin-screw pumps has advanced to be within the proven technologies for oil and gas production. However the overall efficiency of these positive displacement pumps is depending on the gas volume fraction (GVF), i.e. the gas content at inlet conditions. An increasing GVF leads to a decreasing efficiency because of the standard working principle of moving a constant volume through the machine.

In order to abandon the isochoric process, a decreasing pitch has been applied to the feed screws. This leads to a physically more efficient process, i.e. to an approach to the adiabatic one.
