The purpose of the by-pass pig is to reduce and economise on pigging operation and thus to enable future slug catchers to be made smaller. The working principle of the slug reduction method is described. The necessary field trials for verifying the mobility and process performance of the high by-pass pig have been completed with satisfactory result. They verified that nearly 100% slug reduction can be achieved. An overview of the experience is given. The slug reduction performance of a by-pass pig in a given situation can be correlated with the calculated velocity reduction of the pig. This correlation can be used for a quick and simple assessment to determine the applicability of the by-pass pig method for a given two-phase flow pipeline case. The positive results and experience of the trials have shown that the high by-pass pigging technique has reached maturity for application.
