Introduction

In 2013, a trade association representing numerous mineral processing companies requested a safety audit/study focused on slip, trip and fall hazards. Injury experience among all member facilities in the same trade association revealed that injuries classified as "slip or fall of a person" were a consistent portion of the overall number of injuries (23%) over several reporting periods. When broken down to type, the most common injuries were "fall to walking/working surface", "fall onto or against", "fall from machine, vehicle, equipment", "fall from ladders", and "fall down stairs". The desires to both further understand and minimize the number of these injuries lead to commissioning of this study, which took place in a single representative industrial location. The intent of this session is to present examples of hazards observed, and recommended strategies using current codes, standards and regulations to remediate potentially hazardous conditions found. The hazardous conditions addressed within the single facility are believed to be representative of the industry in general as well as many other types of industrial environments, and as such, remediation using the same standards, codes and regulations would apply.
