Safety Snapshot

In 1991 our corporation, a small subsidiary of AlliedSignal (now Honeywell) recorded 95 cases where employees who where injured on-the-job could not return to work the day following their accident (Lost Workday Cases). Our insurance carrier at the time provided little assistance to reduce this number. They where paid a fee on each case handled by their personnel and received additional funds when cases required more attention. We had over 5,000 employees, almost 150 locations and were growing the business. We were not alone; other divisions within AlliedSignal had similar or worse Safety records and also needed something to facilitate a major change within the total corporate mindset when it came to Safety. At that time AlliedSignal was mainly compliance based and re-active not pro-active when it came to Safety.

That change came in the fall of 1992 when AlliedSignal benchmarked and then adopted a process used by the Dupont Corporation. The "Safety Excellence Program" was born and the programs that followed empowered both leaders and workers to work safer and continuously improve their Safety related processes. In time, through the increasing involvement of Safety as a "Best Practice", we joined other firms who could claim they provide and maintain a "World Class" Safety performance level (Exhibit 1.).
