Before embarking upon any aspect of a presentation, training program or meeting make sure you know your audience. There are two specific aspects that we must be aware of as presenters. But before we talk about these two specific aspects lets look at one of the most important opportunities that we all have as presenters that many of us miss for making an impact on our audience. This consists of taking the time to meet some our participants before the actual presentation begins. This is especially true with audiences who you don't know and with training seminars and presentations. This means getting to your location of presentation ahead of time and being prepared so that you can have the time to mix and mingle with your audience. What I do to meet my audience is I greet them at the door before they come in and take the opportunity to meet them. I introduce myself as the presenter and speaker. I ask them their name and what organization they belong to. Then I do what of the most important things to do during this time frame. I listen. Then I ask one more important question of the participants. I ask them why are they there? What do they want to learn from today's presentation? What one thing would they feel good about learning and taking back to their workplace? There are the general aspects of knowing your audience and there are the specific aspects of knowing your audience.
The general aspects of knowing your audience are actually aspects, which are common to every audience that you'll probably present to. These are the aspects of the adult learner. More than likely the majority of us will conduct or present in front of adults. This being the case it is good to know that there are several bits of information that we must be aware of in order to effectively impact your audience with whatever message you want to communicate.
