ABSTRACT:

A new method is introduced for modeling fluid-driven fracture propagation by coupling explicit fracture propagation in MPM with a lower-dimensional diffusion flow model along the fracture. This new method was tested with multiple numerical experiments of fracture propagation in layered materials with interfaces. Observations that are reported by laboratory and field observations (fracture arresting, fracture curving, and reduced fracture growth) in stacked layered media, were obtained in the multiple numerical tests analyzed in this paper.
