ABSTRACT:
In the current paper we present results of our first attempt to use Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors for strain measurements of rock samples under confining pressure. We have demonstrated that the FBG sensors are sensitive to asymmetrical load of rock samples. The main problem that we encountered during the experiment was birefringence of fiber optic glass under stress, which leads to an ambiguity in strain measurements.
