: This paper reports the results of an investigation aimed at understanding and quantifying the influence of the cutter geometry on the forces acting on a rock cutter. The original cutting model introduced by Detournay and Defourny (1992) is modified to account for an additional force component related to the groove geometry. The validity of this new model is confirmed by the results of an extensive series of experiments using the Rock Strength Device with rectangular cutters.
