ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: This paper describes the application of rock mechanics in the design and construction of the Fiesta Texas Theme Park: in San Antonio, Texas. The park was constructed in a former limestone quarry and covers approximately 80 hectares. As a result of quarry operations, the quarry walls had extensive blast damage. Rock mechanics was involved because the park developers and theme park architects were interested in maximizing the available space in the quarry and bringing park visitors as close to the quarry walls as safely as possible. The quarry walls were also planned to be the basis for several of the major attractions. Work completed as part of park development that involved rock mechanics included cliff stabilization, tunnel construction and rockfall hazard mitigation. The visual impact of these works was a primary concern of the park: architects and was an important factor in design. Design and construction of the park involved a diverse team of professionals including owners, landscape architects, ride manufacturers, theme park architects, rock mechanics engineers, park developers, and contractors.
