ABSTRACT
ABSTRACT: A large block slide precipitated by blasting occurred during the foundation excavation for the tailrace channel of the Main Dam Spillway at the Rocky Mountain Project. The block slid along a previously unidentified layer of laminated calcareous sandstone and shale which continued upstream under the already constructed spillway. This paper reports on the studies performed for characterization of the sandstone/shale layer, and the stability studies performed to evaluate the safety of the spillway.
